Who was involved in The Cold War? Why did it happen in the first place?
The Cold War (the only one of its kind in all of history, in fact) was a war between the US and the USSR that never actually consisted of any on-the-ground fighting between these two countries. They did, however, "fight" behind other countries (The Korean War).
The US has never had good relations with the Soviet Union. The US, being the strong Capitalist nation that it is, broke off its relations with the USSR as soon as it first became Communist, since each of the two different types of economies simply could not tolerate one another. Then, during the Great Depression, it repairs the relationship so as to be able to trade with them again. In World War II, the US and the USSR become allies to fight Germany. However, the US was not at all happy with the non-aggression pact the Soviet Union signed with Hitler. Then, during the fighting of the war, neither country hurries to give the other the aid they need, whether it is with a second front in the Soviet Union to pull Germany off of them, or the support for the US troops fighting in Japan.
The key issues that directly led to The Cold War were the fact that the US refused to share their information about the atomic bomb they were building. This angers the USSR because during WWII, they were supposed to be allies, and they feel that they are being cheated. Also, Truman didn't want to appear "soft" when it came to relations with the Soviet Union. This made him extremely harsh when it came to the USSR, and this upset them even more and made them feel even more mistreated. All together, the tensions that have always come between the US and the USSR easily paved the way for a war between the two, even if it is just a cold war.
